The Bobby Ryan trade proposal summary; what would you offer?

The Bobby Ryan trade proposal summary; what would you offer?

On Monday, an NHL executive told Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos that Anaheim Ducks star Bobby Ryan is being shopped.

Over the next 48 hours, the entire hockey world turned into the HF Boards' trade proposal threads.

When's the last time we saw 29 teams and their fans push their chips in on a hand like this? The Dany Heatley Derby? Even then, you had fans that didn't want anything to do with that guy because of his history or because he was violating the spirit of his contract with the Ottawa Senators.

Bobby Ryan is without sin. (OK, outside of using Jonathan Blum to sharpen his blades in the playoffs.) He's 24 years old, has 112 goals in 273 career games and can be considered an elite big forward (though not too physical as to be an elite power forward). He has Olympic experience and can play both all three forward spots. (Although as a center, he made a great winger.)

He's got something every GM, coach and fan wants out of a player: an established track record of success and tremendous upside. And an intense love of vampires, outside of the last Twilight movie.

Now, he's on the block, or at least GM Bob Murray is entertaining offers as the Ducks are 6-13-4 and already 12 points out of a playoff spot in the West. The case can be made the his coach, Randy Carlyle, should go first ? check out Battle of California's stunning incitement of the coach, in which the Ducks are a minus-24 in the first eight minutes of each period ? but he's got that pesky three-year contract and Anaheim's problems might run deeper than that.

So it's not inconceivable that Ryan could be traded; or at least not as inconceivable as The Dread Pirate Roberts following our boat in eel-infested waters. Teams and fans are kicking tires and making their pitches for Bobby Ryan. Coming up, a look around the dance floor.

The Bobby Ryan trade proposal summary; what would you offer?New York Rangers

Everyone got nutty on Tuesday when Larry Brooks reported Glen Sather had inquired about Ryan. If they're serious, the Rangers are one of the teams with the personnel assets that would offer fair value for Ryan and make an immediate impact on the Ducks. From Brooks:

It is believed the Rangers consider Ryan Callahan, Derek Stepan, Marc Staal (who has begun skating on his own), Dan Girardi, Ryan McDonagh and Michael Sauer to be untouchables within the organization regarding this particular equation

That would leave players like Brandon Dubinsky and Michael Del Zotto, to name two. Although one wonders if the Ducks couldn't pry a Michael Sauer in a Ryan deal.

As far as the salary cap goes, trading Dubinsky ($4.2 million) for Ryan ($5.7 million) would help lessen the burden.

The Bobby Ryan trade proposal summary; what would you offer?Boston Bruins

This is the team that our radio buddy Jeff Marek believes is the right fit for Ryan, and the Boston faithful have jumped at the chance to make their fantasy pitches. Stanley Cup of Chowder offers up David Krejci, who is struggling and is an RFA after the season. They don't want to include Kessel trade blue chipper Dougie Hamilton in a deal; good luck with that. Benjamin Woodward of Hockey Independent concedes Hamilton would probably have to be part of the deal.

The Bobby Ryan trade proposal summary; what would you offer?Columbus Blue Jackets

Matt Wagner of The Cannon lists a lot of different pieces for a potential trade, from Fedor Tyutin to Derick Brassard, but doesn't go for the home run: Bobby Ryan for Jeff Carter, straight up. Would the Ducks make the deal?

The Bobby Ryan trade proposal summary; what would you offer?Dallas Stars

Hooray for new owners with fresh cash! Tom Gaglardi is willing to add payroll, and Bobby Ryan would be a coup. But Brandon Worley of Defending Big D says 'no thanks':

A trade for a player like Bobby Ryan just isn't right for the Stars. They'd have to lose a top forward in return (like Loui Eriksson) and some high draft picks. While adding a significant piece to this team is incredibly appealing, we have to consider the price to be paid for such a move.

Loui Eriksson? Would that be the asking price for a Bobby Ryan? Yikes.

The Bobby Ryan trade proposal summary; what would you offer?Los Angeles Kings

Oh, like this would ever happen. Still, Bobby Scribe of Surly and Scribe offers their trade scenarios, while wondering if defenseman Jack Johnson could be the centerpiece:

Andrei Loktionov, Alec Martinez and a 1st or 2nd OR Slava Voynov, a good forward prospect and a 1st or 2nd. This is what we would offer them. They would want more. If it is Jack, then it would be Johnson and a forward prospect. I say Dean should demand a weekly flogging of Brian Hayward?hey, it doesn't hurt to ask.

As long as you're OK with rejection. Jewels From The Crown also offers some Bobby To The Kings scenarios.

The Bobby Ryan trade proposal summary; what would you offer?Toronto Maple Leafs

Given Brian Burke's affinity for American-born players and Bobby Ryan, this would seem to be the right fit ? provided the asking price isn't astronomical.

Doug MacLean of Sportsnet believes it would take "Schenn, Nazem Kadri and a first-round pick for the Leafs to land Ryan." Damien Cox offered this collection of trade bait:

You don't want to overpay, but here's a guy it's easy to get over-excited about. Obviously, a young defenceman would have to be part of a deal, and maybe that's Luke Schenn or Carl Gunnarson or Cody Franson. Nazem Kadri could be in there. Stuart Percy is a young blueliner and Leaf first round playing junior in Mississauga. Nik Kulemin might make sense, but he's having an off-year, too. With the Leafs high in the NHL standings, a 2012 first rounder could come into play.

All of this is to say the Leafs have pieces to trade, and it's not as if Bob Murray and Brian Burke haven't done this dance before a few times.

The Bobby Ryan trade proposal summary; what would you offer?Edmonton Oilers

They have some pieces to play around with, but also have some untouchables (Jordan Eberle, for example, would be in the latter category). OvenChicken8 from Jean Shorts and Bagged Milk goes with a Magnus If I was playing arm-chair GM I would start the offer with Magnus Paajarvi, Ales Hemsky and 2012 1st rounder. Problem: The Ducks are going to want some defense back.

The Bobby Ryan trade proposal summary; what would you offer?New Jersey Devils

We'll throw in the Devils here because (a) Ryan's from Cherry Hill and (b) the notion that a Zach Parise for Bobby Ryan blockbuster could happen, if the Devils couldn't re-sign Parise. But the Ducks probably want a package back.

The Bobby Ryan trade proposal summary; what would you offer?Calgary Flames

Sportsnet believes they could be in play for Ryan: "The Ducks are thin on the back end, so it could mean moving a Jay Bouwmeester or Mark Giordano, but Calgary needs to shake things up." Bouwmeester?

The Bobby Ryan trade proposal summary; what would you offer?Nashville Predators

Bobby Ryan in Music City, on a team that needs an offensive dynamo? Jeremy Gover of Section 303 made his pitch: Defenseman Ryan Ellis, center Colin Wilson, defenseman Teemu Laakso and a first round pick for Ryan. Which still doesn't seem like enough for Ryan.

In fact, two other Nashville bloggers joined in on the pitch, and James Nelson's deal might come the closest: Patric Hornqvist, Teemu Laakso, Ryan Ellis or Roman Josi, 1st round pick or Austin Watson for Bobby Ryan and Sheldon Brookbank.

Boomer Gordon on XM floated a Ryan for Shea Weber deal. Now that's sexy.

The Bobby Ryan trade proposal summary; what would you offer?Buffalo Sabres

An interesting option. Bob Murray was in the house for the Sabres and Islanders last night. The Sabres obviously have an owner who has pushed for a bold move or two.

From Queen City Sports, claiming they have a source:

Buffalo, CBJ, and Toronto are the top three teams INTERESTED in Ryan. Right now Leafs have best offer of a combination of Schenn, GRabovski,Bozak, and/or Kadri. It's a very real possibility that Anaheim is using Buffalo to up the deal from Toronto. Also remember the Burke/Anaheim connection; Burke wants the player he drafted. Right now I'd view Toronto as the front runner. Sabres have an offer of Stafford, A young NHL ready player (my guess is Ennis), and a D prospect on the table.

Meanwhile, Bucky Gleason dropped this nugget in a column about the late Jim Kelley (seriously):

It could be, as a source contended before the game, related to a telephone call I hear they had regarding Ryan Miller on Monday about a possible swap for winger and three-time 30-goal scorer Bobby Ryan. It certainly makes sense, huh Jimbo?

As a foundation for a trade? Sure. As a one-for-one swap? No. The Ducks have more problems than what's between the pipes.

So there you go. Will Bobby Ryan be traded? The signs point to yes. But before you go making your pitch, make sure to read Anaheim Calling's myth vs. fact piece on Bobby Ryan. Especially if you want him as your center.

Paulina Gretzky back in love with Twitter, but not unconditionally

Earlier this week, the hockey world was rocked by scandal as the 22-year-old model/actress of a retired player deleted her Twitter account. Parades are planned, we imagine, now that she had made her triumphant return to the social media platform.

Paulina Gretzky (@PaulinaGretzky) had amassed a following of fans for her whimsical commentary like "if the highlight of ur night is holding a 'expensive' bottle of alcohol dancing like a gorilla on top of the dj booth alone..u r an #idiot."

Oh, and also for her considerable collection of proactive and cleavage-bearing photographs. Those too.

Suddenly, that account was gone, right after a tweet that stated: "Having a nice sit down dinner with my dad about social media..haha #SIKEEE (sic)." The Toronto Star believes that conversation with NHL legend Wayne Gretzky led to the shuttering of her feed.

But the absence was short-lived, with Paulina Gretzky's Twitter reopened for business this week with a new avatar (a photo of her family) and this message to followers (via Jimmy Traina):

Paulina Gretzky back in love with Twitter, but not unconditionally

And within hours, that Tweet was deleted. Who told Wayne? C'mon, 'fess up.

So what gives? Is Paulina teasing us with words after effectively doing so with images? Is her father playing solid defense for the first time in decades? Is The Great One depriving us of The Great Ones?

In any event, welcome back Paulina Gretzky. Twitter missed you.

Puck Previews: Boudreau on rift; suspension outrages Pacioretty

Preview: St. Louis Blues at Washington Capitals, 7 p.m. This is going to be a surreal night in D.C., as Capitals legend Dale Hunter makes his coaching debut following the firing of Bruce Boudreau. The team has lost 5 of 7. His number hangs from the rafters. He owns one suit. His practical jokes are legendary. He will have, as he said on Monday, butterflies in his tummy. Alex Pietrangelo is out with the flu for the Blues. Caps killer Jaroslav Halak is between the pipes. Jason Arnott returns to DC after a stint with Washington last season. Follow Yahoo! Sports NHL columnist Nick Cotsonika as he watches the game from DC.

Preview: Florida Panthers at Carolina Hurricanes, 7 p.m. Kirk Muller makes his debut for the Canes against division-leading Florida and his former teammate Kevin Dineen.

Preview: Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Rangers, 7:30 p.m. The Pens have Robert Bortuzzo and Alexandre Picard from their farm team in Wilkes-Barre, as Kris Letang didn't take part in the gameday skate. Here are some keys to the game from Blueshirt Banter.

Preview: Phoenix Coyotes at Chicago Blackhawks, 8:30 p.m. Great battle tonight between the Coyotes' penalty kill (fourth in the League) and a Blackhawks power play that's been a buzz saw lately. Meanwhile, Dan Carcillo is back after being a healthy scratch and, also, is going to host his own weekly music show on WGN called "The Bomb Shelter." All Neil Diamond. Just a guess.

Preview: Nashville Predators at Calgary Flames, 9:30 p.m. It's Brian McGrattan night! Should the Calgary Flames trade Jarome Iginla? Here's a great post that examines a Malkin To The Kings Iginla rumor, and a trade to Dallas.

Check out previews and updated scores for all of today's games on the Y! Sports NHL scores and scheds page. For tonight's starting goalies, check out Left Wing Lock.

Evening Reading

? Bruce Boudreau on an alleged rift with Alex Ovechkin: "It's so far from the truth," Boudreau said. "We got along, I think, famously." [ESPN]

? Max Pacioretty disagrees with the NHL's 3-game suspension for his hit on Kris Letang, as well as with the NHL relating it to the Cooke/Savard affair. Furthermore: "I haven't been hitting very much at all this season because I never know what the outcome is going to be," continued Pacioretty who leads the team in goals with 10 so far in 2011-12. "To be completely honest with you, I'm afraid to throw a hit because when you're on the forecheck, the defenseman turns his back to you and puts himself in a vulnerable position. It's hard for a player when people are expecting you to finish your checks." [Canadiens]

? Red Fisher rips the Penguins for allowing Letang to return to the game. [Gazette]

? Sidney Crosby would like to put the brakes on any "feud" with Bryan Murray: "It's ridiculous. It's a play that happens in every game. I guess that it's me, it's dissected and analyzed a hundred times more. I really think they're making something out of nothing. If they want to keep beating it around, they can. I don't have anything else to say about it. I think it's ridiculous we're still talking about it three days later, to be honest with you." [National Post]

? Is Roberto Luongo a backup goalie? [Globe & Mail]

? The Rangers have kicked the tires on Bobby Ryan reports the NY Post. As have roughly 28 other teams, and parts of Europe. [SI]

Puck Buddy Comment of the Day: Patrick on Jeremy Yablonski, banned for the year by the KHL:

This guy doesn't even deserve to be on any ice on this planet and that goes for the rest of them. I understand that you need someone that knows how to fight when your guys are getting nailed on the ice, but these guys are just out there to fight anyone and everyone. I am all for fights in NHL, but when its like this, its just pathetic and should be charged with who knows what. They are looking to kill someone and if they kill someone they will just hide behind the skates and say it was an accident and get away with it and make the rest of the hockey leagues around the world look bad.

We're pro-fighting and anti-death, for the record.

Bold Prediction: Jaroslav Halak spoils Dale Hunter's debut in Washington.

Puck Previews: Caps host Pens; Mason Raymond returns (update: or not)

Preview: Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals, 7 p.m. ET. For the first time since the Winter Classic last January, the Sidney Crosby / Alex Ovechkin hype is back. And like the Winter Classic, both teams enter tonight's game heading in two different directions. The Penguins have won three of four since Crosby's return last week, while the Capitals have won just twice in their last seven games, including Tuesday night against the St. Louis Blues that doubled as new head coach Dale Hunter's first game behind the bench.

Preview: Phoenix Coyotes at Winnipeg Jets, 8:30 p.m. ET. The Winnipeg Jets and the Atlanta Thrashers meet for the first time ever and Coyotes captain Shane Doan plays his first meaningful game in the 'Peg since his rookie season of 1995-96. Tonight also marks the season debut for Coyotes forward Kyle Turris who was in a contract standoff until last week. Today would have marked the deadline for Turris to ink a new deal with Phoenix otherwise he'd have to sit out the season. (UPDATE: Turris will not play tonight. Boo.)

Preview: Florida Panthers at Los Angeles Kings, 10:30 p.m. ET. The revitalized Panthers head to Southern California hoping to end a six-game slide against the Kings coming off their second-best performance in the month of November in franchise history. Containing Mike Richards should be top of Florida's list of keys to the game as the Kings centerman has scored nine goals in 10 games, including two shorthanded.

? According to Nick Kypreos, Ducks GM Bob Murray has told Bobby Ryan that he will not be traded. That sound you heard was Darryl Sutter and Dion Phaneuf laughing. [Sportsnet]

? After suffering a fractured vertebrae during the Stanley Cup Final, Vancouver Canucks forward Mason Raymond will finally return to the lineup tonight against the Nashville Predators. [Province] UPDATE: Raymond will not play tonight afterall.

? Yale's women's hockey team will be holding a "White out for Mandi" tomorrow night against Quinnipiac with funds raised going to the Mandi Schwartz Foundation. [Yale]

? Jonas Hiller's awesome Movember mask went to some lucky bidder at auction last night for a cool $16,875. Or $8,437.50 for each win he had in the month of November. [NHL Auctions]

? Braydon Schenn returns for the Flyers tomorrow night. [Inquirer]

Puck Buddy comment of the Day: "Darren" on David Krejci's new 3-year, $15.75 million deal:

"No discount but certainly market value for a guy who led the playoffs in scoring and is the top scoring Bruin over the last 3 seasons. Tied for team lead in points the last 2 seasons and 2nd only to Savard the season before. He's a notoriously slow starter and has been slumping along with his linemates to start the season.

I suspect he'll be right around that 60 point mark again and for a team that consistently rolls 4 lines, that's about right where you'd expect him to be."

Bold prediction: Florida's rough patch of luck in Los Angeles continues as Jonathan Quick posts a 2-0 shutout.

Puck Previews: Wings seek sixth; Bobby Ryan seeks inner peace

Bobby Ryan goes to his happy place, which is a pancake house in Pasadena.

Preview: Boston Bruins at Toronto Maple Leafs, 7:00 p.m. EST

Bruins-Leafs games are always fun, especially now that you can directly compare the play of Tyler Seguin to the play of Phil Kessel, but at this point, it's worth watching the Bruins when they play anyone. They're on an 11-0-1 run. Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs aren't too bad a watch either -- they're currently in possession of the top line in the NHL, the trio of Tyler Bozak, Phil Kessel, and Joffrey Lupul. I know -- I don't understand how this happened either.

Preview: Montreal Canadiens at Anaheim Ducks, 10:00 p.m. EST

The Ducks are beginning to approach the unthinkable: creating a world where the Columbus Blue Jackets aren't the worst team in hockey. They've lost seven straight and the positive signs are few and far between. But if there's any reason for optimism Wednesday night, it's that they seem to have the Habs' number of late. Anaheim's 4-0-1 in their last five versus Montreal, and Carey Price is 0-2-1 lifetime versus the Ducks.

Preview: Tampa Bay Lightning at Detroit Red Wings, 7:30 p.m. EST

Hey, remember when the Red Wings won five straight, then lost six straight? Well, they've won five straight again. This team is streakier than a poorly maintained display window. Couple that with the fact that the Lightning haven't beaten the Red Wings in the post-lockout era and you have all the classic trappings of a Red Wings win. Unless they take the Lightning too lightly. Could this be a trap game? *gasp* The Lighting play the trap!

?Tweet of the day, right here: "Randy Carlyle met with Bobby Ryan today concerning trade rumors and told him he 'has to find that inner peace in himself to deal with it.'" Presumably, they proceeded to burn one down. [Jeff Miller]

?Cory Schneider, aka the C-wall (props to Dave Lozo), will get his seventh straight start versus the Nashville Predators. Said Roberto Luongo: "Motherf----!" Okay, actually, he said "We're both number ones." Except one number one is starting all the games. [The Province]

?The 10 worst NHL cliches. [The Hockey News]

? Jim Rutherford has turned his icy Rutherfordian glare on Tomas Kaberle. On the blueliner's poor play to start the year: "He has to figure out a way to get out of it or he won't be playing with the Hurricanes long."[XM Home Ice]

Puck Buddy comment of the Day: "yougottabejokinen", on Ovechkin and Boudreau:

Way too much focus on boudreau and ovechkin. What about the rest of the team? Ovechkin has pretty average numbers this season but the whole team has been underperforming. From a stats perspective really the only forward having a good season is Backstrom.

Correct. There are other players on the Washington Capitals.

Bold prediction: The Ducks lose. Wait, bold? Okay, the Ducks win, then. Whatever.

Capitals powerless vs. Penguins; Asham answers for taunt

Capitals powerless vs. Penguins; Asham answers for taunt

WASHINGTON, DC ? In Dale Hunter's first game as Washington Capitals coach, they had 19 shots and one goal in a loss to the St. Louis Blues. Game No. 2? Seventeen shots against the Pittsburgh Penguins, including a paltry two shots in the third period, in a 2-1 loss.

In the final moments of the third period, the Capitals couldn't even corral the puck, let alone mount an attack with an extra skater.

"We weren't playing dangerous hockey. We were chipping the puck into their zone, trying to clog up the neutral zone," said Arron Asham, who assisted on Craig Adams' first-period goal.

"We knew we needed a strong defensive effort," said Chris Kunitz, whose third-period individual effort in the Caps' zone and sneaky shot past Tomas Vokoun proved to be the game-winner. "We played great: sticks on pucks, getting the pucks around the wall, out of our end. Making them do some things they didn't want to do."

The win for the Penguins was their first in regulation against the Capitals in 14 games, having gone 0-11-2 in that stretch. It was the first time Coach Dan Bylsma had beaten them in regulation.

"There's a lot about that team that's scary," he said. "Today, especially in the second, the came at us hard, forechecked hard and were tough to handle that way. Very aggressive on the forecheck. That's maybe something we hadn't seen [before Dale Hunter]."

The Capitals and their fans continue to see losses. Washington is in a 2-7-1 tailspin, including two tightly played losses in Hunter's first two games. Against the Penguins, they were facing a team playing two rookies in place of defensemen Kris Letang and Zbenyk Michalek, but couldn't take advantage of it.

"They're learning a new system. But we have to move the puck quicker out of our end. We spend too much time, and it wears out our offense," said Hunter.

Meanwhile, in the offensive zone, Capitals leading scorer Jason Chimera (10 goals) said: "We had a lot of cycle time, but didn't get pucks to the net. They kind of threw everything at the net. We kind of waited for perfect plays."

Some additional notes ?

? What some thought was a save-of-the-year candidate from goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, on a Nicklas Backstrom shot at a gaping net, actually went off the iron, he said. Via Seth Rorabaugh, Backstrom said of the play: "What I saw, it hit the cross bar. I don't know what you saw."

? It was the teams' first game since the infamous Arron Asham fight against Jay Beagle, in which he bloodied and concussed the Capitals forward and mocked him with a "go to sleep" celebration. Moments after he assisted on Adams' goal, Asham answered the bell with hulking John Erskine:

Lots of big swings, not many connections, but the end of that chapter for the teams.

"I knew I was going to fight coming in. The guys over there have a lot of pride. We got it over with early and played some hockey," said Asham, who hadn't fought Erskine before, but played with him on Long Island. "I knew I was going to have to do it. I wasn't backing down."

While speaking about the fight, Asham was interrupted by Bylsma, who shook his hand and thanked him for the effort.

? Alex Ovechkin had one shot, 10 hits, two penalty minutes and 19:22 of ice time. Sidney Crosby had 3 shots, 3 shots blocked, 2 missed shots and a minus-1 in 20:21 of ice time.

Most frustrating for Crosby: Getting dominated in the faceoff circle to the tune of 6-for-22, losing 12 draws to Brooks Laich.

"I gotta be better there obviously, but for some reason we were taking them all on his strong side. I gotta get better on my forehand side. I'd say 75-percent were on his backhand, on his strong side," said Crosby. "It made a tough night a little bit tougher when you're trying to win draws."

? Finally, Matt Cooke may have received a head shot late in the game from John Carlson.

The Pensblog had the video, saying Carlson "got knocked into Maryland by Orpik, and then he did this." Worthy of the Shanahammer?
