2.56pm: All hope of play having long since expired at Wantage Road, the players have shaken hands, and are already on the road reports Richard Rae. The points are as detailed below. Happily, the long-term forecast for next week, when Northants can secure promotion against Surrey, is more hopeful.

1.50pm: And Vic Marks has written a blog on the ICC's choices. He reckons it made some mistakes.

1.04pm: England's Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott have been short-listed for the International Cricket Council's player of the year award. The duo have also been nominated in the Test player list alongside James Anderson, while five England players have been included in the ICC's Test team of the year which was announced today. You can read the full story here.

11.07am: It has finally stopped raining in Northampton, writes Richard Rae, but it's never a good sign when there are no gatemen on duty, and the prospects of there being any play at all are not great. There are no signs of life from the groundstaff in terms of beginning the mopping up process, understandably perhaps, and with thunderstorms forecast for after lunch, the odds are that this match is now destined to be drawn.

This would mean Northants taking six points, and Middlesex 10. That will leave Northants, who now have just two games to play, 41 points clear of Surrey in third - and Surrey are playing here next week. Middlesex will be 18 points behind Northants in second. With a game in hand, and Leicestershire to play twice, they still have a very good chance of finishing as champions. They have certainly looked a better side than Northants here.
