Talking Horses: The latest news and best bets in our daily horse racing blog, plus the start of a new week's tipping competition

The latest news and best bets in our daily horse racing blog, plus our tipping competition

Today's best bets, by Will Hayler

The prize money's a bit rubbish, but the racing's good at Wetherby and Dusky Bob (3.05) can keep up the good work for Danny Cook on Wednesday.

Cook, who moved north to join Brian Ellison's yard in the summer, gave the stable's Neptune Equester an excellent ride to win at Haydock on Saturday and he is riding with plenty of confidence at present. It surely can't be long until some of the other big northern yards also start to offer Cook rides.

Having failed to go on since winning his bumper for Nick Gifford, Dusky Bob is unbeaten in two starts for Ellison and could continue to exploit an interesting loophole in the handicapping system by mixing his obstacles in the weeks ahead. He will appreciate the move up in distance and by switching back to fences can run off the same rating as when successful over hurdles at Hexham last week.

Had he won two or three chases on the bounce, the handicapper would almost certainly have moved his hurdles rating up in sympathy. But by switching between disciplines, he doesn't even get a weight penalty for his latest win and another narrow win could see only minimal damage done to his mark both over fences and hurdles.

Irish trainer Charles Byrnes brings a couple of runners across to the track and has telegraphed his intentions by booking Tony McCoy for both. Sea Of Thunder has taken time to find his feet since being bought to join the Gigginstown House team but won with something in hand at Thurles last time out.

However this smart ex point-to-pointer could just find dual bumper winner Hazy Tom (1.30) has a yard too much pace at this flat, speed-orientated track. He wasn't suited by the slow early pace on his hurdles debut at Aintree last month, but still showed a good attitude when outfighting It's A Gimme from the final flight.

Kempton hosts a one-mile Listed event which has attracted a predictably competitive line-up including the likes of Riggins and Bravo Echo, both of whom have shown themselves to be Polytrack specialists.

But neither have been done any favours by wide draws this evening and it could pay to take a chance on veteran Mac Love (6.35) who has been there and done it all in his long career, but who won this race three years ago and had little chance at Newmarket recently on his first start since rejoining Roger Charlton. He's 39-1 on Betfair. That's a ridiculous price.

History Repeating (6.05) is a nicely-bred filly, related to a host of decent performers, who has only had five starts this season. Tried at a mile and a half for the first time on her latest start, she met trouble in running when pinned against the far rail at a vital stage and is well worth this second attempt at the trip with her sire, Singspiel, such a strong influence for stamina.

Ladbrokes Tipping competition, day three

15244 edged into a clear lead by picking Funky Monkey (3-1), though orso is a good second, having had both that one and First Avenue (7-2), a double also achieved by unfaircomment. SmokingGun1 and chanleyman paired Funky Monkey with Minortransgression (5-1).

Today, we'd like your tips, please, for these races: 3.05 Wetherby, 4.00 Cork, 7.05 Kempton.

This week's prize is a 50 bet on Saturday's Hennessy Gold Cup, kindly offered by Ladbrokes.

As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of 1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today, but you will start on -6.

In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
