Talking Horses

Today's best bets and the latest news in our daily horse racing blog, plus our weekly tipping competition

Today's best bets, by Will Hayler

Phidippides (3.20) only has to deliver over two and a half miles today rather than the distances which his namesake (and please don't start an argument about spelling ? it appears either variant is acceptable) famously covered in ancient Greece.

But despite a lack of experience over fences which proved his downfall on a couple of occasions last season, he could be worth chancing at Wetherby this afternoon. It's a competitive contest in which Evan Williams' runner makes his reappearance, but that has helped prop up his price, and if his jumping holds together, I hope he will have too much class for the opposition at a track where positive tactics often play dividends.

The handicapper dropped him 4lb for a disappointing performance when odds-on on his final start last season, but he had fared much better on his first two runs of last season and was far from disgraced when going down by only a length to an on-song Rock Noir at Exeter. Rock Noir is now rated 146 over fences, 10lb higher than Phidippides's mark and third-placed Qozak also went on to boost that form.

I appear to have missed the boat to some extent with Ngong Hills (4.30), whose price has steadily crumbled so far this morning. But he's had a fair crack of the whip from the handicapper since missing a couple of years with injury and his latest third to Humbie in an above-average Carlisle contest strongly hinted that a return to winning form was imminent. Aidan Coleman is a positive jockey booking for this runner from the yard of Chris Grant, a stable for which money often talks.

Libys Dream (6.10) is the one to be on at Wolverhampton tonight as she moves up to seven furlongs for the first time. Mick Mullineaux's filly is still learning her way after just five starts but made eyecatching progress from off the pace when everything happened just too quickly for her over six at Wolverhampton last time. Two winners and two placings from the trainer's last five runners is encouraging enough and it will be disappointing if Libys Dream can't maintain her progressive profile this evening.

Tipping competition, day five

There were a grand total of five winning tips on here on Thursday. William36 was the only one to pick Clinical (7-1), natwho and carbis had Charleston Lady (14-1), factormax and mike65ie won with Spice Fair (8-1).

Today, we'd like your tips, please, for these races: 3.00 Newmarket, 3.20 Wetherby, 4.10 Newmarket.

Get those tips in early! In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day (today).

This week's prize is a copy of The Mumper, a novel by Mark Baxter and Paolo Hewitt about seven pals who stumble into racehorse ownership, now filmed as Outside Bet with Bob Hoskins and Jenny Agutter starring and due to be in cinemas at the end of next month.

As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of 1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today but you will start on -12.
