Is Port Huron actually located on Tattooine? We only ask this because the (alleged) Michigan city is the epicenter for the odd collision between "Star Wars" mythology and hockey.
The IHL Port Huron Icehawks had annual "Star Wars" nights, wearing sweaters themed to Darth Maul and Boba Fett. On Saturday, the NAHL Port Huron Fighting Falcons hold their second annual Star Wars Night at McMorran Arena against Imperial forces the Jamestown Ironmen.
And they'll be wearing Chewbacca hockey jerseys. Which is awesome. From the Falcons:
This year's jersey features the mighty wookiee Chewbacca, with Rebel Alliance logos on the shoulders, and Millennium Falcon silhouettes around the waist. A pink breast cancer awareness ribbon appears on the upper left of the jersey's front side. The jerseys were designed by Great Lakes Garrison's Scott Withers.
The jerseys will be auctioned off during and after the game to benefit St. Joseph Mercy Hospital's Pink Ribbon Fund. Here are a few other views, courtesy of Port Huron captain and amateur model Ryan Teal:
So what's with the "Star Wars" obsession?
"This is the second time the Fighting Falcons have done Star Wars Night, but it's actually the fourth consecutive year for it in Port Huron," said Mike Reed, media manager for the Fighting Falcons. "The Port Huron Icehawks of the IHL ran it their last two years of operation. I worked for them their final season, but wasn't there for the first Star Wars Night so I don't actually know who had the initial idea."
As was previously mentioned, the Great Lakes Garrison ? aka grown men in Stormtrooper costumes and other cos-play ? helped design the sweater. They're also the reason why Star Wars Night is happening so early in the season: They had scheduling conflicts at later dates. (Something about capturing a princess and recovering stolen plans for a battle station.)
We love this jersey, and especially the mini-Millennium Falcons on the edging. Obviously, we would have loved a sack full of C-3PO parts somewhere over the shoulder; but a cluttered look and too many graphics ? a Jedi craves not these things.
We do hope they play the Chewbacca roar after every goal. Even when it's not Star Wars Night, actually.
