Pass or Fail: New York Islanders third jersey for 2011-12

Earlier this month, we brought you a New York Islanders third jersey that a former graphic designer for the team leaked on his Flickr page. The Islanders said that it was one of the designs they were considering. The good news is that it apparently didn't make the cut.

The bad news?

According to Chris from Icethetics, this will be the New York Islanders' third jersey for the 2011-12 NHL season. As he writes: "I've recently been made aware of some new details and can confirm this is what the final version looks like."

Basically, it's the leaked design with gray replacing the white on the shoulders and on the stripes near the waist. This may or may not be an improvement.

Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank said he received several emails after the first leak that the actual jersey chosen by the Isles was "worse." Botta's verdict on the new sweater:

Tough to argue against the early consensus that it's neither attractive, classy, imaginative or respectful of the Islanders' tradition as the greatest dynasty inthe history of hockey in the United States.

But it's black, which would make it cutting edge were this actually 1991.

Again, the sweater seems like an attempt to tie the Islanders in with the Knicks' and Mets' color schemes, and especially the latter. (Hey, gotta start getting that house in order for the move to Queens, right?) As it stands, this jersey might actually be less attractive ? and this is really, really saying something ? than the Atlanta Thrashers' third jerseys that looked like a box of crayons threw up on them.

Of course, this is just a sketch of what they'll look like. Passing judgments before actually seeing one on John Tavares isn't fair ? oh, screw it.
