Talking Horses

Today's best bets and the latest news, plus the final day of our weekly tipping competition

In the absence of the abandoned Chepstow meeting, Friday's British racing action looks decidedly limp and although 1000 Guineas possible Gamilati is the headline act on the Meydan card, she doesn't look to have a great deal to beat either.

Donald McCain's Diocles (3.10) should score at his local track, Bangor-on-Dee, but those looking to take the cramped prices about this well-regarded horse ought to be a little concerned about the recent form of the yard.

Since the New Year, the stable have had 13 horses start at 7-1 or less with just one winner, including defeats at 8-11, evens, 6-4, 6-4 and 7-4. McCain has maintained such a very impressive strike-rate in recent seasons that this blip, inconsequential as it might turn out to be, is very unusual.

McCain's Seedless looks over-rated by the handicapper and Lucky Mix (12.55) will surely take the beating in the opener on her debut for Philip Hobbs.

The Hobbs team were also out of sorts in the run-up to Christmas but look in better health now and this is the only horse the stable have sent up to the track from Somerset although Richard Johnson hangs around all afternoon to ride Miss Mayfair for Tim Vaughan in the bumper.

At Lingfield, Fine Resolve (1.45) looks a fair bet at odds-against having shown a consistent level of performance on Polytrack so far. He is fitted with cheekpieces in a bid to keep him more focused in the finish and I like his chances.

Brazillian apprentice Raul Da Silva has been gaining new admirers in recent days with winners for a number of yards and he got a good tune out of Beggers Belief (3.55) at Wolverhampton last week.

This contest is arguably his toughest assignment yet but Beggers Belief is in the form of his life and looks sure to give another good account, having shown resolution to overcome trouble in running last time out.

Tipping competition - final day

Orso hits the front going into the final day having gone for the 'safe' option of the course form of Rosewood Lad and been paid out at 11-2, although it might have been a different story had Lonewolfmcquaid put his selections on here before heading down to the bookies. Nobody ? yes, nobody ? named 10-1 winner Emirate Isle, but a 10-1 winner on the final day of the competition could be all that is required to turn this competition around with the field so tightly bunched.

This week's prize is a copy of Down The Bookies, by John Samuels, a history of bookmaking in Britain. The blurb promises "stories about street runners, illegal betting, clock bags, tic tac language, fraud, race and match fixing, the horserace betting levy board, betting coups, money laundering, betting exchanges, and much more". The winner will receive an email next week with further details.

Today we'd like your tips, please, for these races: Bangor 2.00, Lingfield 3.25, Wolverhampton 5.45.

As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of 1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day, this being the last day. Non-runners count as losers. You are welcome to start playing at this stage, but you will begin with a balance of -9.00 to account for missing the first three days.

In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
