They're twirling octopi in Tampa now after the Red Wings score

The Detroit Red Wings have always been one of the handful of NHL teams that "travels well"; meaning, there's always a very large turnout of fans invading visiting arenas every season.

Thursday night's Red Wings visit to the Tampa Bay Lightning was extra special because of the "Stevie Y faces his former team for the first time" theme, as former Red Wings captain and executive Steve Yzerman is now the GM of the Lightning; and there was plenty of red in the crowd cheering on the visiting team.

To further prove that Detroit's fans like seeing them on the road, when Pavel Datsyuk scored his second of the night, an octopus hit the St. Pete Times Forum ice in the grand tradition of Red Wings home games.

Yes, an octopus hit the ice in Tampa Bay after a Red Wings goal.

Octopi have been found on ice surfaces other than at Joe Louis Arena in the past, but the ice crew picking up the eight-armed creature never do their best Al Sobotka impression afterwards, like this fellow employed by the Lightning:

Yikes. Detroit won the game, 6-2.

According to ESPN 1040 in Tampa's Mike Corcoran, Lightning officials had no comment after the game about the rogue ice crew member. We imagine that Yzerman will immediately place him on waivers tomorrow and Tampa will call up a replacement from Norfolk.
