It takes roughly 400 milliseconds for the human eye to complete a blink. There are 100 milliseconds in one tenth of a second. Keep all of this in mind as you watch Brad Richards of the New York Rangers win the game at the Phoenix Coyotes, with the puck crossing the line with "0.1" on the clock to give the Rangers a 3-2 victory.
As Coyotes color man Tyson Nash said: "That's as close as I've ever seen it." As MSG's Sam Rosen said: "And this one is going to overtime WOW THE PUCK WENT IN no goal."
As we imagine HBO "24/7" producers said: "Yippee! There's a segment!"
With less than a minute remaining in regulation, the Coyotes killed off a power play off an interference call to Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Getting a necessary line change, Phoenix allowed the Rangers a quick entry back into the zone on a long lead pass to Brandon Dubinsky ? keep in mind how important that extra time turned out to be.
Dubinsky cycled it behind the net to Ryan Callahan, who passed to Ryan McDonagh, who sent a backhand pass to Richards. He settled the puck and whipped a strong backhand shot to goalie Mike Smith's glove side as the buzzer sounded. Rangers fans in the crowd ? and where were plenty ? roared as the puck went in; the referee waved it off.

Replays showed the puck was nearly over the line with 0.1 seconds on the clock and appeared totally over the line before the clock hit double-zeroes. The NHL War Room in Toronto confirmed it: The Rangers won the game, 3-2, on Brad Richards' 12 goal of the season and one of the most dramatic buzzer beaters in recent memory.
Chris Pronger's 2010 buzzer-beater vs. the Blackhawks came with over 2 seconds left; Steve Yzerman scored with 1.7 seconds left against the Kings in 2003; John Madden's goal vs. the Islanders in 2007 came in the last minute; and Henrik Zetterberg beat the Vancouver Canucks in OT with 0.3 seconds left in 2009-10.
The closest comparison in the last few years? Who can forget the New Jersey Devils getting doused by the Juice (Jussi Jokinen) to knot their 2009 conference quarterfinal? "The Miracle Finnish" indeed.
Of course, sometimes the clock can be cruel; ask Mike Richards about that.
