Throughout his 11-year career Brian Rafalski has been one of the best puck-moving defenseman in the NHL. He's been a member of three Stanley Cup winning teams, won an Olympic Silver Medal, and has put up excellent individual numbers, only once scoring fewer than five goals in a season, and eight times eclipsing the 40-point plateau, including each of the past five seasons, four of which have been spent with the Detroit Red Wings. In 29 games this season, the 37-year-old Rafalski has posted one of the more curious stat lines in the league: 29 games. zero goals. 26 assists.
That's quite the lopsided point total, and it's closing in on an NHL record. According to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press -- per the Elias Sports Bureau -- the NHL record for most assists to start a season without a goal is 33 which was set by Teppo Numminen during the 2005-06 season when he tallied 33 assists before scoring his first goal (he ended up finishing the season with two goals scored).
