In a move that should have been expected at some point, the Detroit Red Wings announced on Monday that head coach Mike Babcock has signed a four-year extension with the club that will keep him and his steely-eyed stare behind the bench through the 2014-15 season.

His previous deal was set to expire following this season.

The 47-year-old Babcock is currently in his eighth year as a head coach in the NHL, and sixth with Detroit, joining the team prior to the 2005-06 season after spending two years with the Anaheim Ducks.

Entering this season he had compiled a 326-163-19-66 regular season record that included four division championships in the past five seasons. Along with his regular season success, he's also been to the Stanley Cup Finals three times (with two different teams: Detroit and Anaheim), winning it during the 2007-08 season with the Red Wings.
