CALGARY -- Jaunty of step and wide of smile, Dion Phaneuf faced the inevitable media circus at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Thursday morning, eager to share his thoughts on returning to the town where his National Hockey League career began."Haven't seen you in a while,'' the 25-year-old defenseman called out to the gathering throng, after taking a turn around the Flames' home ice with his Toronto Maple Leafs teammates.
Phaneuf was the key to the mammoth deal the Calgary Flames swung last January that sent him, Fredrik Sjostrom and Keith Aulie to the Leafs for Niklas Hagman, Matt Stajan, Jamal Mayers and Ian White. Mayers and White have subsequently moved on to other NHL teams.
His return has been widely anticipated in these parts.
