The Phoenix Coyotes quietly picked up a solid free agent center Tuesday, inking former Washington Capital Eric Belanger to a one-year deal. As they try to build off a playoff appearance last year, the Coyotes have done a good job stocking their NHL roster with proven veterans.Belanger has a chance to be a top-six center for Phoenix, but it's an opportunity that didn't present itself until recently. Belanger's agent claims there was a verbal agreement on a contract in Washington, but the Capitals didn't follow through on the deal.
Belanger's agent, Joe Tacopina, told the Washington Post that the team went so far as to help Belanger get his daughters enrolled in school.
