John TavaresUNIONDALE, NY -- New York Islanders center John Tavares suffered what the team has termed a mild concussion in the second period of the Islanders' 5-4 shootout loss on Saturday night over the Dallas Stars.

Tavares suffered the injury absorbing a hit from Dallas forward Adam Burish near the Stars' blue line late in the first period. He left the ice, accompanied by Islanders trainer Garrett Timms, and never returned to the game.

"It's tough to see a teammate and friend get hurt like that," said Islanders wing Matt Moulson, Tavares' closest friend on the team. "The league is trying to stop head injuries, and then you see that."

Burish said his hit on Tavares was "unintentional" and at the time he didn't even realize which Islander player he had checked.

The Islanders announced that the 20-year-old Tavares will be re-evaluated on Monday. The Islanders host the New York Rangers that day in a matinee game.
