Matt Carkner Emerges as Unlikely Hero for Senators

Everybody likes a feel-good story, something that touches the heart and gives you hope.

Ottawa Senators defenceman Matt Carkner, pictured above, is the latest such story after his unexpected heroics rescued Ottawa's season.

His goal at 7:06 of triple overtime lifted the Sens to a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, giving new life to the Senators and this series. Ottawa now trails Pittsburgh 3-2, with Game 6 in Ottawa on Saturday.

To be sure, Carkner was an unlikely hero. Here is a guy who didn't even become a full-time NHL player until this season. He toiled eight years in the minors but never gave up hope. Not once did he give up on his dream or decide to take his act to Europe to see if he could make more money.
