Just when you thought things couldn't possibly get any worse for the New Jersey Devils, they announced on Tuesday that star winger Zach Parise will miss the next three months after having a torn meniscus repaired during exploratory surgery. It was originally announced on Monday that Parise would be out indefinitely due to the surgery. As one of their best players it's obviously a damaging blow to a Devils team that has had a forgettable start to the season. (John Fischer at the Devils blog In Lou We Trust, for example, described the opening month as "Disappointing. Embarrassing. Frustrating. Sad. Poor. Terrible. Miserable. Careless. Unlucky. Unfortunate. Excremental. Pathetic." Ouch). Through its first 13 games New Jersey has the worst record in the NHL (3-9-1), the worst goal-differential (minus-22) and the worst power play (7.3 percent). All of this while prized free agent acquisition Ilya Kovalchuk was a healthy scratch for a 6-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabres a couple of weeks ago.
New Jersey's other big-money free agent pick up this summer, shot-blocking maniac and stay-at-home defenseman Anton Volchenkov, has played in just two games after he was hit in the face with a puck during a loss to the Washington Capitals back on October 9.
