The Minnesota Wild let Derek Boogaard go this summer -- in part -- because he was too good at his primary job, which is fighting.Boogaard was so good, the Wild thought, that no one would fight him anymore, rendering him a useless part of the team because his other hockey skills are no better than marginal.
Since signing with the Rangers, Boogaard has shown plenty of that fighting ability, and he actually scored a goal (first in four years).
Thursday night, we saw Boogaard locked up in a rarity for him: a competitive fight.
