Last year, first-year Minnesota Wild head coach Todd Richards surprised no one by deciding to name a permanent captain. It was also not a shock that his choice was forward Mikko Koivu.

He responded by posting a career high 71 points on 22 goals and 49 assists. His contract became a high priority for general manager Chuck Fletcher this offseason. Fletcher wanted to get the Finnish center signed long-term.

Thursday, he got his wish. Koivu inked a seven-year contract extension with the Wild that will keep him with the franchise through the 2017-18 season.
