The Montreal Canadiens would like nothing more than to pick up right where they left off last season. Trouble is one of the key cogs that drove the team's surprising playoff run was shipped off to St. Louis.
In a move that sent shockwaves around the NHL over the summer, the Canadiens sent goaltender Jaroslav Halak to the Blues after he reached superhero status for his standout performance in the playoffs.
Halak stood on his head as Montreal shocked Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals in the first round of the playoffs. He followed that up by leading the Habs past Sidney Crosby and the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round before the Canadiens ran out of gas and lost to the Philadelphia Flyers in five games in the Eastern Conference final.
Going into the summer, Halak and Carey Price were both restricted free agents and only one was going to return to the fold. To everyone's surprise, Halak got the boot and the Habs got prospects Lars Eller and Ian Shultz in return.
The spotlight is now directly on Price, who signed a two-year $5.5 million contract in late August.
