The Tampa Bay Lightning not only dropped Thursday's game in Washington -- 6-3, thanks to an Alexander Semin hat trick for the Capitals -- they also lost their captain, Vincent Lecavalier, for the next month with a broken hand that he suffered early in the first period.Currently in the second year of an 11-year, $85 million contract, Lecavalier has three goals and six assists for Tampa Bay this season in 14 games. Once the top offensive weapon in Tampa Bay's lineup, his production has dropped in recent seasons to a still-productive, but not-quite-elite level.
That slight drop in production has coincided with the rapid development of Steven Stamkos who, in just his third pro season, has not only proven to be Tampa Bay's best player, but has also become one of the best players in the NHL. He currently leads the league with 14 goals and 26 points. He tallied his 14th goal -- in his team's 15th game -- during Thursday's loss in Washington.
