Ilya Kovalchuk and His Failed Shootout Attempt

Wednesday's Sabres-Devils game was the NHL's early season disappointment bowl: two teams that entered the season with high expectations, and two teams that have, so far, struggled mightily. Entering the contest they were at the bottom of their respective divisions, combining for just eight wins in 30 games. The Sabres ended up erasing a 4-3 third period deficit to earn a 5-4 win in a shootout, giving Lindy Ruff -- currently the longest-tenured coach in the NHL -- a victory in his 1,000th career game as a head coach.

After Buffalo's Derek Roy gave his team a 2-1 edge in the tie-breaking skills competition, the Devils turned to their six-time 40-goal scorer, Ilya Kovalcuk. The end result will be seen on blooper reels for the rest of the week, if not the rest of the season.
