The Montreal Canadiens made a move to shore up their blue line Tuesday, acquiring veteran defenseman James Wisniewski from the floundering New York Islanders.Montreal gave up only second- and fifth-round picks for Wisniewski. The second-rounder was a compensatory pick, which Montreal got after failing to sign former first-round pick David Fischer. The fifth-rounder is a conditional pick in the 2012 draft.
Wisniewski had a career-high 30 points with Anaheim last season, and has 21 points on three goals and 18 assists in 32 games for the Islanders this season. He joined New York in a trade with Anaheim in late July.
Montreal has just 11 goals from their defensemen so far this season, thanks in large part to the knee injury that took Andrei Markov out for the season after he scored just once. Wisniewski, 26, becomes the highest-scoring defenseman on the Montreal roster.
