The 2010-11 season is still young, but it's already been very good to Joe Thornton. After being named as the team's captain earlier this month, the 31-year-old center signed a three-year, $21 million contract extension with the San Jose Sharks on Saturday.Said general manager Doug Wilson in a statement released by the team, "Joe stepped up and made a tremendous commitment to this franchise, his teammates and the fans in San Jose. We are very pleased that we now have another key piece of this team's core under contract for the next four seasons."
Wilson has been busy in recent months making sure the core that he spoke of is kept together, signing forwards Joe Pavelski and Patrick Marleau to long-term contracts this summer. Now that Thornton's deal is finalized -- he was set to become an unrestricted free agent following this season, and would have been one of the top players available -- the Sharks have he, Marleau, Pavelski, Dany Heatley and defenseman Dan Boyle all signed through the 2013-14 campaign (at which point they will all be eligible for free agency). The $7 million per year cap hit is actually a small decrease from the $7.2 million his current deal carries.
