Lee Stempniak Signs In Phoenix

It took almost two months, but the second-leading goal-scorer in this year's free agent class was finally able to reach a deal, as Lee Stempniak inked a two-year contract worth a reported $1.75 million per season with the Phoenix Coyotes on Sunday night, according to the Arizona Republic.

Update: ESPN's EJ Hradek has the figures on the contract as two years, $3.8 million ... or $1.9 million per year.

Stempniak, of course, spent part of last season with the Coyotes after being acquired at the trade deadline, and instantly went on a goal-scoring tear, finishing the regular season with a career-best 28 goals. Despite the impressive total, he does carry some risk. His career to this point has been an up-and-down roller coaster on a year-to-year basis, and last year was no exception. But even if he doesn't repeat his totals from last year, it's still a very favorable deal for the Coyotes.

Look at it this way: his reported cap hit will only be about $125,000 $275,000 more than the one the Rangers will be on the hook for with Derek Boogaard for the next four years (sorry, Rangers fans).
